Farxiga does not cause erectile dysfunction, and research even shows it may help improve erections in men with type 2 diabetes by improving blood sugar control and vascular health. The drug is FDA-approved for diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease, and its main side effects involve genital or urinary infections, but not sexual dysfunction. Overall, Farxiga is safe for sexual health, but it should only be taken under a doctor’s guidance.

If you’ve been prescribed Farxiga (dapagliflozin), whether for type 2 diabetes, heart failure, or chronic kidney disease, and you’re dealing with erectile dysfunction (ED), it’s natural to wonder whether the medication could be playing a role. But the reality is different. Farxiga is not known to cause erectile dysfunction, and in people with diabetes, it may support better heart health and erectile function.

What is Farxiga?

Farxiga (dapagliflozin) is a medicine that belongs to a group of drugs called SGLT2 inhibitors. According to the FDA Label 2024, Farxiga is approved for the following conditions

Type 2 diabetes

Farxiga can be prescribed to adults and children aged 10 years and older. It helps in lowering high blood sugar and can be used along with diet and exercise.

Cardiovascular conditions

Many people with diabetes or heart disease struggle with heart failure. Farxiga has been shown to lower the chance of being admitted to the hospital for heart-related fluid buildup and symptoms.

Chronic kidney disease

Farxiga helps in slowing down the progression of kidney disease. It also reduces the chances of developing serious conditions like end-stage kidney disease or needing dialysis.

What Is The Link Between Farxiga And Erectile Dysfunction?

A large number of people search for “Farxiga side effects erectile dysfunction,” thinking that the medicine they consume can have the potential to cause erectile dysfunction. But this is not proven. There is no scientific evidence showing that Farxiga can cause ED.

Rather, some of the studies have proved that Farxiga may help with ED. People consuming Farxiga may have ED due to diabetes, not due to the medicine, and diabetes is one of the major factors causing ED.  Long-term high blood sugar can damage the blood vessels that supply blood to the penis, injure penile nerves, and increase the risk of hypertension and heart disease. All of these can cause poor erections. This means Farxiga is prescribed to people who already have the biological risk factors for ED. It can give a false impression that the drug causes the problem.

But reality can be different. A 2024 study done on 30 men with type 2 diabetes and severe ED was given either tadalafil alone, dapagliflozin alone, or a combination of both for three months. After three months, the erectile scores in these men improved in all groups.  The erectile function scores doubled from dapagliflozin, while the combination therapy produced the greatest improvement. Another 2024 study was done on diabetic mice with reduced oxidative stress in the testicles. This study showed improvement in sperm concentration and motility in these mice. However, some mice also showed reproductive toxicity depending on the diabetic conditions. But since there is no human study to prove this, we cannot claim its effects on humans. [3]

So this is where we get to know that Farxiga does not cause ED; rather, it can improve ED indirectly by improving diabetes.

There is no strong evidence to prove that SGLT2 inhibitors like Farxiga would cause erectile dysfunction. However, they do improve endothelial function and glycemic control which are two major contributors to erectile health in men with diabetes.

Are There Any Side Effects Linked With Farxiga?

Farxiga does not cause erectile dysfunction, but like all medications, it can produce some side effects. These side effects are mostly related to genital or urinary infections because the drug increases sugar in the urine. [1] [4]

Sexual side effects

The most common sexual-area side effects include genital yeast infections (more common in uncircumcised men), fungal balanitis, and urinary tract infections, which may temporarily cause discomfort during sex. In extremely rare cases, SGLT2 inhibitors, including Farxiga, have been linked to Fournier’s gangrene, a severe infection of the perineal area, but this is rare.

General side effects

Beyond sexual symptoms, Farxiga also causes several general, non-sexual side effects. These include increased urination and thirst (because the drug removes excess glucose through urine), mild dehydration, headaches, back pain, and nasal congestion or sore throat. Some people may see small increases in LDL cholesterol, which doctors monitor over time.

Less common side effects

These side effects are rare but can involve volume depletion leading to dizziness or low blood pressure, ketoacidosis even with normal blood sugar levels, temporary changes in kidney function, and rare severe allergic reactions.

Overall, most side effects are manageable and mild, and Farxiga remains a well-tolerated medication with no evidence of causing ED or negatively affecting male sexual function.

Is Farxiga a Cure for Erectile Dysfunction?

The short answer is no. Farxiga is not an erectile dysfunction medicine and should never be used as one. However, if you have diabetes, Farxiga may indirectly support better erections by improving blood sugar control, reducing vascular stress, and helping overall heart and kidney health. But this does not mean you should take Farxiga for ED or start it without medical supervision. It is a prescription drug for diabetes, heart failure, and chronic kidney disease, and not for sexual health.

The Bottom Take

Farxiga does not cause erectile dysfunction. It may help improve erections in men with type 2 diabetes by improving blood sugar, reducing vascular stress, and supporting healthier blood flow. Like all other medications, it has some side effects, but ED is not one of them. While it can cause genital infections and other mild side effects, ED is not one of them. If you are experiencing erectile problems, it is always better to consult a doctor.
